Mrs. Shirley W. McNeil: Program Director
FOUNTAIN YOUTH DEVELOPMENT CENTER; FYDC is a 501(c) 3 Non-profit organization and founded September 9, 1999 by Shirley W. McNeil. Fountain was a small town with limited resources. Fountain was without a library, recreation center, playground, internet access for the children and a place to further their education. After realizing this I thought Fountain Youth Development Center would be a good asset, to establish a one stop resource center for the community. FYDC established a schedule for the book mobile to drop off books for the children to read, a place in which books, periodicals, newspapers, pamphlets are kept for reading, reference or lending. FYDC established a collection of standard programs related to a specific application that are available for general use (such as 4-H Club, NC Sickle Cell Syndrome Program, Council’s Multicultural Enrichment Services, Churches, Pitt County Schools System) and providing educational tool for the parents. Children were required to read additional material after completing their homework assignment for 30 minutes. Internet access was install for the children to look up material for research papers, a community center in Fountain for the children and parents to interact with one another. Arcade room, color TV, relaxation room, a reading area for smaller children, pool tables, and a separate area for eating and drinking were also available. This wouldn't had been done without the help received from Z. Smith Reynolds Thank You.
FYDC housed between 50-65 children in the town of Fountain, a low-income town with limited jobs and has a population of approximatly 380 people. FYDC moved to 350 William Walston Lane, Tarboro, NC in June 2004 continue to serve the community in Edgecombe county, offering one-on-one serve to many whom needed and also to groups.
June 2010 FYDC moved to 708 Edmondson Ave, Tarboro, NC telephone no. 252-903-7523 with a Summer School Enrichment Program and continue to serve with our Afterschool Program as the Director of Fountain Youth Development Center. It has been an honor and blessing from the Pastor to allow me the opportunity to use his building. We are able to house more children and I have a nice office. We want to thank the Church for the use of the Vans and Bus for transporting the children from School to the site and from the site to home. such pleasure to receiving help with the use of the building from Rev. George Terry, Pastor of St Paul Missionary Baptist Church. We have been granted a 4 year grant from 21st Century Community Learning Center to help us continually to educate the Children's and it is a blessing from GOD. I thank GOD for laying me on Pastor Terry heart with the building. I'm continuing to pray for more blessing to continue, to be able to house more children and open more jobs for the people who wants to work.
